EARTH SPIRITS

EARTH SPIRITS

A big huge heartfelt Thank You (Tusen Takk) to my little earth spirits for choosing me to be their Mamma. They brought focus and purpose into my life, and have made me grow in ways I never thought possible … of course some would claim there was lots of room for improvement. Having my children tell me that they love me and think I am the best Mamma is the ultimate prize in my life, and by comparison any failures become mere speed bumps and any successes just icing on the cake. I remember at the time being a little irritated, that my junior assisters had to play right where I was taking a LE shot. Ironically it is one of my favorite images of my little earth spirits, symbolizing the love, beauty and chaos that is motherhood.

GITCHI GAMI FULL MOON

GITCHIE GAMI FULL MOON

This was image came to be approximatley 10 minutes after the Full Moon rose in late September 2012.  I was camping with my two junior assistants on the shores of Lake Superior by the mouth of the Temperance River in some cold and rainy fall weather. The evening of the full moon was shaping up to be beautiful with the first clear skies in a week, and I was all set up to get some great moonrise shots over the still lake. So far so good - all according to my great photographic plan - but if you have ever attempted to combine motherhood and the timing of nature photography - you might suspect there was to be a snag. Just before the much anticipated moonrise junior assistant #2 started dancing around with the universal "I got to go" dance done by kids all over the world. " Mamma, I have to go Poop" Not a simple number one daily taken care off by the shore. I have to admit I was somewhat torn between what I thought would be a great shot and the bodily needs of my 6 year old, so I said ' let's just take care of it here" But no, my 1st junior assistant who at 10 is a stickler for any conservation regulations, balked at this as we were not 300 yards / 100 meters away from the water source and he knew of a pit toilet 5 minutes up the trail. For a split second I thought to let them go up by themselves, but the thought of a State forest pit toilet having marinated all summer and the difference of circumference between the throne and #2's booty, made maternal instinct win over the photographic one. I packed up the equipment and as we hurriedly hiked up the trail I could see the gorgeous moonrise behind me.

After dealing with the call of nature we hiked back down to the agate beach and by now the moon was well above the horizon and looked rather small, I noticed the gorgeous dance of light and color at the transition line of beach and water and decided to try and capture it.

This became my first published image on Earthshot, which was a lesson to me to just get out of my own way and go with the flow. The images you are meant to create will find you.

ICESTAR

ICESTAR

With the forecasted temperature high of -20 C / -5F and majority of the surrounding population heading for shopping malls, I got the bright idea to go out on the ice to hunt for ice abstracts. Standing on the spring fed Lake Nokomis, camera & tripod all set up, the temperature difference between the ice and spring feed caused a huge loud cracking right in front of me. Now, I have fallen trough ice before and am in no hurry for a repeat performance. Since I did buy that expensive camera insurance I decided to stay and get a few clicks. Here is one called "Ice Star".

BLOOM

"And the day came when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom"

- Anais Nin

To all you people who kept asking me; "Why don't you do a blog? You have all those photos and you always have something to say" (True on both accounts).

Be careful what you ask for - Here it is!
