2013 FAVS - JANNE JATAWA

HAPPY SOLSTICE & NEW YEAR

Time to reflect on the past 13 moons. In a world that most of the time feels like navigating quicksand, it is my photography and the excuse it gives me to spend more solitary time in nature that steadies the ground.

Combining motherhood and nature photography on a bare bones budget definitely requires some fancy planning and a good measure of patience from all parties involved. Somehow my 2 junior assistants (7 &11) and I managed to spend 11 weeks this year in our sleeping bags, half off the grid and the rest in primitive campgrounds or in the back of the metal pony. We headed west for our favorite mountains and what started out as a portfolio enhancing trip became something much more. Over the weeks living in the direct company of nature I saw my children grow in impressive ways. They gained self sufficiency, social skills, invaluable knowledge of the natural world and the joy of rolling out of their cozy sleeping bags at 4AM to view more spectacular twilights and sunrises than most people see in their lifetime. With one eye in my viewfinder and the other eye on them I saw the good little humans they have become. The seed is planted in them as future stewards of the earth and I know they are on their way to becoming good ancestors.

As an additional bonus some satisfactory images managed to find their way onto my sensor. I am still working on the post processing back log with new software, new playlists. incense and candles. Thanks to the family for all your support, which most of the time sounds like this when I call from my desk for another set of eyes; “Whose turn is it to go look this time?”

Since I couldn’t decide which Rumi quote I liked best to set the tone for 2014, you get both.

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”

- Rumi

"Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray..."

- Rumi

I wish you a joyous 2014  ; )
